Hartington, The Peak District Accommodation
Courtyard Cottages - (Self Catering) off Market Place, Hartington, The Peak District Derbyshire England SK17 0AL Telephone 01298 84447 Two one bedroomed cottages just upgraded with little regard for expense 3 in one cottage (£225 to £350), and two in the other (£210to £330) inclusive of (central) heating Located in the centre of the highly regarded village of Hartington in the heart of the Peak District, these two one bedroom cottages converted from a single stone barn stand in a courtyard at the back of our third (500 year old plus) cottage sleeping six persons (see separate entry for the larger cottage). In fact the Courtyard Cottages have now been converted twice, originally about 20 years ago, and once more about two years ago. When we acquired these cottages just before their recent up-grading, they were designed to accommodate four persons, but we have reduced them to one bedroomed in order to provide more comfort. More significantly we have totally upgraded them. The quality of the decoration, fittings and furnishings have quite genuinely been our driving force, rather than concern over expense. These cottages have comfortably achieved a grading of 4 Star by the English Tourist Council.
Both cottages have superior custom built kitchens with gloss work-tops and gorgeous real granite sinks, fridge with freezer section and micro-waves. The cookers have ceramic hobs. The bathrooms have Italian tiled floors with powerful showers over the baths. The floors where not carpeted or tiled have top of the range attractive laminated floors giving the cottages a contemporary feel without detracting from their historic charm. There are plenty of old beams and other interesting features. The bedroom in one of the cottages has a double bed with a further single bed if required (not a Z bed or put-you-up), so if used by two people can be used if required as a twin. The other cottage has a double bed only. All mattresses are extra thick. Both cottages have leather settees and leather arm-chairs, 2 televisions each, videos, micro-waves and CD players. Despite being in the heart of the village, there is a real feeling of seclusion and peace in the cottages and for that matter in the courtyard. In this courtyard, as well as there being provision for off-road parking for our guests, there are also two separate outdoor seating areas (albeit rather limited) and flower beds and hanging flowers. On the other side of the courtyard there is a washing/drying room and a barbecue. The village itself is highly regarded, being the start of many excellent walks, and also having three tea-shops, two pubs a couple of gift shops, two grocers and newsagents and a famous cheese shop where genuine Stilton cheese of other produce from the local Creamery is sold. There is also a duck pond, fine Norman Church and magnificent Jacobean Youth Hostel. The River Dove is only a few hundred yards away and a very popular walk starts in the village, only 80 yards from the cottages, immediately you are passing over some lovely meadows to the River, then along the stretch known as Beresford Dale (passing the fishing temple where the Complete Angler was written by Isaac Walton and Charles Cotton) onto Beresford Dale, and then to Dove Dale. In addition there are numerous further footpaths and bridleways in the immediate vicinity, offering superb walking. The highly popular Tissington trail, which runs for 17 miles is just one mile up the road, and two further trails also used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders are just two miles away. These three tracks are ideal for cycling as is the network of quiet minor roads which can be accessed at numerous points along the trails. (Cycle hire facilities abound) Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Buxton, Ashbourne Ilam Country Park, Castleton Monsall Dale and Cromford are all within 10 miles of us. Alton towers is just 25 minutes drive away and the Potteries is within easy reach. Details of prices and availability can be seen on our own web site (just click on the wording 'Visit our Web Site' above,) although we can advise that at the present time (July05) there is no availability until 29th October, although there is plentry after then.
