At the top of the valley are Hard Knot Roman Fort and the road over to Ambleside. Train and river run down to the small village of Eskdale Green and on to Ravenglass on the coast. Near to Ravenglass is Muncaster Castle with its famous gardens and Owl Centre. The Valley also has five excellent pubs with Real Ale and good food. The Cottage is in a quiet part of the village and is an excellent base for walking, touring or a quiet relaxing rest throughout the year.
