The Kings Arms Hotel is one of the oldest establishments in Lockerbie, dating from the 17th Century. Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed here in 1745 & Sir Walter Scott in 1813. The Hotel has catered for weary travellers since the times when horse drawn coaches would pass through the wide passageway to the stable beyond ( the undercover parking area today). The original beamed buildings and tack room are now the comfortable Lounge bar and Buccaneer Restaurant where today's guests can enjoy tasty Bar meals beside blazing log fires or choose from our Table dhote or A La Carte menus.

The area has various places of interest. Here is a just sample of some of the local attractions and there are many more.

  • Gretna Green - the world famous Blacksmith's shops, where romantic runaway marriages were forged in past times. Still very popular for weddings today with over 2500 a year. Made even more popular with the BBC television programme 'Love Town'.
  • The Southern Upland Way coast to coast long distance footpath stretches miles from Portpatrick in the west to Berwick in the east.
  • A picturesque run takes you to Eskdalemuir where just beyond the village you can visit the only Buddhist temple in Britain - the Tibetan Samye Lung centre which was established in 1967.
  • The whole area has many connections with Robert Burns - Ellisland Farm where he lived in 1788 and at Dumfries where he died in 1796, are just a few. Amongst the works written in the area were The Selkirk Grace, Tam O' Shanter and Scots Wha Hae.
  • Nearby Moffat is always popular with visitors, and is often winner of the best kept village in the 'Britain in Bloom' Awards. It has a fine park with a boating pond. North of Moffat is the Devil's Beef Tub a large natural valley where the Border Reivers hid their stolen cattle. East of Moffat up the beautiful Moffat Water you can see the Grey Mares Tail a spectacular 200ft waterfall.
  • There are lots of golf courses in the area - Langholm, Powfoot, Lockerbie, Lochmaben are just a few.
  • Burnswark Hill whose flat top can be seen for miles has the remains of two Roman camps. A short walk to the summit can give you, on a clear day, a view over Annandale to the Cumbria Hills.
  • There are many Castles in the area - Comlongon, Hoddam, Caerlaverock (which has one of the best wildfowl reserves), also the picturesque Sweetheart Abbey, and the ruins of Lochmaben, the one time seat of Robert the Bruce are all within a short drive.
