The Chaise House is situated in the small, historic/picturesque village now known as Bampton but in Anglo-Saxon times it was known as “beam” (Old English for tree, post, or pillar) “tun” (a hill). Archaeological remains indicate that the area has been a settlement since Roman times. Weald, denoting “woodland”, was first recorded by name in the late 12 th century. Bampton and Weald were separate townships by the 13 th century reflecting the historic division of lands between the traditional ecclesiastical lands held under the chief manors of Bampton Doilly and Bampton Deanery. According to the records of title deeds held by Jesus College, Oxford University, which acquired several lots of land with houses in 1687, believed to be part of the sale of the de la More estates: namely a messuage and two yardlands in Weald for £1,150. Thomas Bedford, executor of the will of the late Sir Leoline Jenkins, purchased the scattered property in Bampton and Weald, much of it lying in the common fields, which became known as College Farm . In 1976, the college sold the farmland for development, and sold the main farmhouse, The Chaise House, a large barn and three smaller barns (all Grade II listed buildings) together with an acre of land to a potter. Douglas and Susan Ronald, who are commercial advisors on the restoration of historic properties for alternative use to a number of important landowners, have owned the property since 1991 and have meticulously restored the main house, The Chaise House and the barns. | ||
